Lanita McGee

The Division of Continuing Education is honored and proud that Lanita McGee was awarded the 2008 UCEA Outstanding Student Award.

Born and reared in Cincinnati, Lanita holds a bachelors degree in Business Management and Computer Science. However, she discovered her real passion has always been food! Lanita has been a K-State student since Fall 2006 and is completing her studies at a distance. She presently is a senior majoring in Dietetics.

In 1996, she graduated earning her BA in Business Management and Computer Science, and then took a job with Proctor and Gamble. Two weeks after graduation she experienced the first health incident that later was diagnosed as Neurofibromatosis Type 2. This illness eventually became debilitating enough to require eight brain surgeries. Serious post-surgery complications included vision impairment and partial paralysis. Lanita also lives with a related hearing loss, balance issues, and many side effects from medication.

Daily life is complicated for Lanita because of her illness, and many in her condition would be tempted to be content with status quo, but Lanita continues to work toward a second career and does what she can to help others. It would be hard to identify many students with the perseverance and commitment Lanita exhibits as she conquers obstacle after obstacle. We applaud Lanita McGee. We respect her drive, determination, inner strength, and resilience. She is a joy for those who work with her, including DCE staff and faculty.
