The K-State Reading Specialist program is an approved program accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Candidates who complete this program, in addition to or as part of a master’s program, are eligible for an endorsement in the Reading Specialist area from the Kansas Department of Education. Students seeking this endorsement must hold a valid Kansas professional teaching license.
Reading Specialists serve a large number of students within Kansas School districts, positively impacting Kansas children and young adults. Reading Specialists also provide ongoing professional development as literacy leaders within their schools and districts, further benefitting faculty, staff, and students. Through this program in the College of Education, Kansas State University strives to expand literacy knowledge and extend its expertise to individuals and educational institutions across Kansas.
The demand continues to rise for highly qualified reading specialists as school districts emphasize reading instruction to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind legislation. K-12 teachers interested in building their experience in teaching reading, differentiating instruction, and providing support and intervention for struggling readers should consider this program. The assignments and experiences will require students in this program to incorporate new materials, new strategies, and means of assessment into practice.
