What Students Are Saying

Krista Soria

“I thoroughly enjoyed the academic discourse from colleagues across the nation (and internationally too). In many ways, sharing past experiences and newly gained knowledge among other advisors and student affairs professionals enriched my education. I believe this factor is the highlight of the program: learning from and with my classmates made this whole experience worthwhile. My classmates were supportive and were genuinely interested in helping me to succeed.

Additionally, the convenience of distance education promoted my ability to complete the program even though I am a busy professional working full time and teaching part time at the university. The distance education format offered flexible scheduling, allowing me to complete the degree in a relatively short time frame.

The professors teaching this program are top-notch! The majority of instructors have experience teaching, advising, and researching—this combination makes for highly effective teaching and learning in the classroom. I feel honored to say that I have had classes with Charlie Nutt, for example, the executive director of NACADA. My advisor, Judy Hughey, was incredibly supportive of my educational endeavors and assisted me with all of the paperwork necessary to graduate.

Finally, educational opportunities are limited in Alaska—it is simply not possible for me to receive this kind of training here in our state. By bringing the education to me via distance education, I was able to learn so much more about the theory and philosophy behind my profession. The tuition is very affordable and even less expensive than many out-of-state programs. All in all, I would recommend this educational experience to anyone!”

“I never imagined that I would someday complete a master's degree. As a member of the first class in the MS in Academic Advising, I found the entire experience personally and professionally gratifying. The program gave me the opportunity to achieve my educational goals in a convenient and interactive online format. The ability to connect, develop relationships with faculty and students from across the country, and learn at the same time makes this program truly unique. I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to flourish in the advising profession.

I have learned theory and techniques that can be practically applied in my everyday academic advising.”

“Even though I received my Graduate Certificate in 2005, I am still using the knowledge I gained in those classes.”

Kevin Smith, Wright State University

“As an advisor in a rural outreach site of a community college, the program provided me with much needed guidance in advising, theory, career development, learning processes, and diversity.”
