Self Evaluation

Are You a Good Potential Distance Education Student?

Will distance education fit your lifestyle, educational needs and learning style? Following are some basic questions to help you decide if distance education is right for you.

I am self-disciplined, work well independently and complete tasks and assignments ahead of schedule.
I have good time-management skills that will enable me to balance coursework with my personal and professional life.
I can devote 5-6 hours per week to a three-hour course.
I possess strong written communications skills.
I am comfortable expressing myself using phone, e-mail, and chat rooms and do not necessarily require face-to-face meetings with the instructor and other students.
I am confident enough with computers, printers, and software to ask technicians for assistance when needed.
I am capable of downloading software from the Internet and installing it on my computer on my own or with assistance from K-State.
I have access to the Internet, e-mail and a computer on a regular basis.
I need to take university courses for a degree, job or career advancement, or other important reasons.

If you answered yes to the majority of these questions, then you are a good candidate for success through distance education courses. You are self-motivated, knowledgeable and experienced with computers and the Internet, possess strong written communication skills, and you have strong reasons for seeking higher education opportunities.

If you answered no to the majority of the questions, you might want to reconsider enrolling in distance education courses and realize that you may have to make adjustments in your life in order to be successful in the coursework. If you answered no to a technology question you may want to consider a computer training prior to undertaking a distance education course or simply seeking Internet access through a local provider.
