Who can take Intersession classes?

Intersession is open to anyone (both K-State students and others). Prior enrollment in K-State classes is not necessary. However, students must be admitted to a degree program or designated as a nondegree-seeking student before enrollment can take place in a class.

Why students take Intersession classes

  • Allows students to focus on one class at a time
  • Typically taught in a smaller class setting
  • Can fulfill General Education requirements
  • Complete degree requirements faster
  • Opportunity to take elective classes
  • Ability to explore a different or creative subject area
  • Getting ahead for the upcoming term
  • Some classes are only offered during Intersession
  • Opportunity for domestic or international travel
  • Parking is a breeze!

Classes & Enrollment

Enrollment is through iSIS, just like any other K-State class. See the Classes & Enrollment section for details on how to find the Intersession classes and the enrollment steps.

Go/No Go

Intersession classes may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen reasons. Decisions about which Intersession classes “Go” will be made based on the number of registrations (early enrollment helps ensure that classes will have enough enrollments to be offered). Students will be notified by e-mail if their class is canceled. Students who enrolled in a canceled class have the option of enrolling in another class or obtaining a full refund.

Late Enrollments

A $50 special handling fee for late enrollment will be charged for enrollments received on or after the first class meeting date.

Tuition and Fees

On-campus coursework will be assessed tuition based on the student’s resident/nonresident status. Off-campus and online classes will be assessed at a fixed rate with no distinction made concerning the student’s resident/nonresident status.

An additional amount is assessed for most classes associated with the College of Business Administration, College of Engineering, and College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. Online classes will have additional fees. Privilege fees are included in the total cost of the class.

On-Campus Fees:
  • Resident Undergraduate per credit hour – $206.20
  • Nonresident Undergraduate per credit hour – $563.10
  • Resident Graduate per credit hour – $297.90
  • Nonresident Graduate per credit hour – $643.90
Off-Campus (Online) Fees:
  • Online Undergraduate per credit hour – $304.00
  • Online Graduate per credit hour – $393.00

Billing

The K-State Cashier’s Office will provide an electronic bill (eBill) on or around the 15th of each month. The eBill notification will be sent to the students K-State e-mail address and will be available in iSIS under the “Student Account” area. Students will be able to make payments online. eBilling begins for each term as follows: Fall—July 15th, Spring—December 15th, Summer—May 15th.

Tuition may be paid in several ways. See Controller’s Office / Cashier’s Office for further details on payment options.

Retakes

Undergraduate students may retake a class during Intersession to improve their grade. See Retake Policy in the Undergraduate Catalog for full details. Consultation with your academic advisor is highly recommended.

Incomplete Grade Policy

See the DCE Incomplete Policy regarding the issuing of an incomplete grade. Incompletes can roll over to an “F” grade if not acted upon in a timely manner.

Credit Hours

Intersession classes are 1–3 credit hours or credit units offered from a variety of academic departments and colleges. A 1-credit-hour class is usually taught in one week, a 2-credit-hour class is usually taught in two weeks, and a 3-credit-hour class is usually taught in three weeks. Classes generally meet for three to four hours each day (Monday through Friday), providing time to focus on the class in length.

Credit Hour Limit

The maximum credit hours allowed for Intersession is 4 credit hours per student. Anyone wishing to enroll in more than the maximum credit hours must have written approval from his or her academic dean.

Grades

Intersession grades will be averaged into the student's overall K-State and term GPA. Grades will be available to students in iSIS within three weeks after the last day of Intersession. The scholastic record of each undergraduate is evaluated twice yearly at the end of the fall term and at the end of the spring term. The student's scholastic status does not change as a result of work taken in Intersession.

Graduation in August

Students are not allowed to graduate during the August Term if they are completing an August Intersession class. The deadline for grades is the reason why graduation is not permitted, which will not allow for Summer Graduation.

Grading Option Changes

Students wishing to sign up for courses on an A-Pass-Fail basis must do so at the time of enrollment in iSIS, or before one-third of the class meetings have elapsed. Consultation with your academic advisor is highly recommended before enrolling in this option.

Status Changes

No status changes (i.e., undergraduate to graduate credit) will be accepted after classes have started. All requests for status changes after the start of the class must be submitted through the Graduate School.

Drop/Refunds/Withdrawals

Students dropping a class must do so in iSIS. Refer to the DCE policies for this information. Students who fail to attend class may receive an “F” unless they formally drop the class.

Textbooks

Textbooks (required or recommended) have been ordered for most classes and will be available at Varney's Bookstore at the start of Intersession. Information about textbooks is available from the instructor or from Varney's.

Library

During Intersession, the Hale Library hours of operation vary. View current hours of operation online or call 785-532-3014.

Location of Classes

Classroom locations are noted in three places: iSIS, the Course Schedule in the Academics website, and the DCE Class Search.
