The purpose of the annual Community Economic Development Conference is to present new ideas and directions on community economic development, to allow communities to learn from the successful exchange of information. The conference provides something for all community and economic development leaders and volunteers including: public and private economic and rural development professionals, municipal, county and state officials, Chamber of Commerce representatives, media, business people, higher education representatives, and others interested in community and economic development. Kansas State University Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture provides a forum for discussion of statistical issues motivated by agricultural problems. The conference brings together statisticians from academia, industry, and government to discuss ideas and advancements in the application of statistics to solving agricultural research problems. Water and the Future of Kansas is for any Kansan who is interested in water. This conference is the forum for all Kansans water interests. Attendance will allow you to meet representatives from most of the state agencies, universities and organizations who study, plan, regulate, or are interested in influencing decisions on how our waters are managed. Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology, is a hands-on workshop which focuses on the practical application of conventional and new commercial systems of rapid identification of micro-organisms from medical specimens, food, water and the environment. Arts and Sciences

The K-State Music Symposium is a week-long event designed especially for music educators in the Midwest. Held in June each year at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Contact: Heide Burke

Education

Council for Public School Improvement (CPSI) annually sponsors an effective four part conference series. Nationally known keynote speakers are brought in to discuss leadership and restructuring topics within the field of education. Engineering

The Bridge Design Workshop Series provides an excellent opportunity for individuals involved in bridge design and construction to become familiar with the design and construction techniques currently available and the pro's and con's of each technique. Contact: Tanya Beninga

EXCITE! (EXploring sCIence and TEchnology) is designed to introduce young high school women to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. EXCITE! is a year round program that offers girls in the 9th - 12th grades opportunities on and off campus. Contact Tanya Beninga

GROW (Girls Researching our World) is workshop designed by a network of partners brining middle school girls into science, math, engineering and technology. Contact Tanya Beninga

The 8 hour HAZWOPER Refresher Course re-qualifies participants to enter hazardous waste sites in the field and to work appropriately with hazardous materials in a laboratory. Contact Tanya Beninga

The 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training Course provides certification for individuals who work at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities, hazardous waste clean up sites, and for those who respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials. The Industrial Refrigeration Workshop is a one-week intensive short course on industrial refrigeration as practiced in food freezing, refrigeration, and in other low temperature applications. A Systematic study of the technical background, the practice, and the latest developments in low-temperature refrigeration. Contact Tanya Beninga

The Kansas Masonry Conference is dedicated to the promotion of the benefits of masonry and improvement of the production, design, and uses of quality masonry products. Contact: Tanya Beninga

The Kansas Transportation Engineering Conference is held for Department of Transportation personnel, transportation engineers, and all others involved in transportation issues. Contact: Tanya Beninga

The Refrigeration in the Meat Industry Workshop is a two-day intensive short course on refrigeration as practiced in the meat processing and refrigerated storage industry. A systematic study is made of the technical background, the practice, and the latest developments in refrigeration as applied to the meat industry. Contact Tanya Beninga

The Scholer/Peterson Concrete Conference is dedicated to promoting and improving the production, use, and placement of quality concrete and concrete products. Held in early February each year, the conference is offered for architects, home builders, concrete contractors, ready mix concrete suppliers and others who work with concrete and concrete products. Superpave Mix Design: SD and Superpave Field Laboratory Technical (SF) Certification Training is offered jointly by Kansas State University and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). This course will certify engineers, technicians and other personnel who will be involved in the Superpave Level-I mix design and who will be involved in the construction of Superpave hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements using Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) Specifications in the State of Kansas. Successful completion of the course and certification is required to submit Superpave mix designs to KDOT and for performing test on the projects with the QC/QA specifications. Traffic Assistance Services for Kansas (TASK) has been providing quality training in highway safety since 1980. The courses are offered by Kansas State University and the University of Kansas, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration and the Kansas Department of Transportation. Academic Chairpersons Conference is an annual forum where academic chairpersons, administrators, and faculty from all areas of higher education share the most successful, innovative ideas and strategies to assist each other in becoming more effective in their positions. Contact: Sharon Brookshire

The National Leadership Conference on Student Government is an annual conference designed specifically for committed student leaders and their advisors from two- and four-year public and private institutions of higher education. This is a working conference stressing small group discussions, a sharing of information and facilitators with solutions to concerns. The Center for Leadership Development Incorporated, sponsor of this annual event, offers unique affordable programs for today's leader. Pat J. Bosco, Ph.D., founder of the Center and Kansas State University administrator, has over 30 years experience in leadership training, student government advising, campus union programming, residence hall staff training and Greek affairs in both a community college and major university setting. His demonstrated commitment to these areas is expressed in the many keynotes, workshops, conferences and consulting opportunities he engages in each year. Youth Activities

The Kansas City Design Discovery Program provides an intensive introductory experience for those who are curious about the environmental design fields of architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, and regional and community planning. Participation is open to individuals who have completed at least the ninth grade. University credit is available. Contact: Bettie Minshall

Miscellaneous

The Loan Documentation Seminar is sponsored annually by Kansas Ag Bankers. This professional development seminar for commercial and agricultural loan secretaries, lending support staff, and loan assistants, focuses on up-to-date loan documentation requirements and useful skills for effective performance. This seminar is excellent for orienting new employees to loan documentation requirements, and also gives experienced employees a refresher on documentation requirements and provides them updates of changes in the industry. The Governor's Conference on Juvenile Justice is held in July at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. The Governor's Conference on Juvenile Justice focuses on Community Issues, Behavioral Issues, Facility Training, Legal Issues and Information Technology as it relates to juvenile offenders. Attendance at the conference provides continuing educational units, continuing legal education, training and general information to law enforcement, prosecutors, social workers, mediators, legislators and others interested in juvenile justice, crime reduction and prevention. The Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (JMIH) is an international meeting devoted to the scientific studies of reptiles and amphibians. The primary emphases of the meeting is to increase knowledge about these organisms and support young scientists who will make future advances in these fields. This is an annual meeting of four societies (ASIH, SSAR, AES, HL, ) to share current research and network with professional peers. Graduate students compete for presentation and travel awards. Attendance of this audience runs approximatley 50% graduate students and 50% faculty members. Students/faculty come from all over the world. Contact: Heide Burke
