Twenty-Third Annual Conference
February 8-10, 2006
Orlando, Florida

Changing Leadership: Expectations for Chairs

The old adage that “the only constant in our lives is change” is true for an academic chairperson. At one time the chair’s job was to teach nearly a full load and attend to administrative details, coordinate evaluation procedures, and convene departmental meetings. Expectations for today’s chairs are quite different.

While every campus is different, it is likely that a chair will experience new expectations wherever they reside. Many will be asked to be more entrepreneurial, to forge new interdisciplinary relationships, to make better use of technology, to better define and assess student learning, to foster alumni fundraising, and to deal with more complex litigious issues. In addition, external funding agencies and state and national governments increasingly seek accountability evidence at the department level. For a chair initially employed as a disciplinary expert, these expectations can be daunting; but they can also be viewed as wonderful opportunities to pursue a departmental vision in creative ways.

How changing leadership expectations impacts the professional life of the chair is the focus of the Twenty-Third Academic Chairpersons Conference.

About the Conference
The Academic Chairpersons Conference is an annual forum where academic chairpersons, administrators and faculty from all areas of higher education share the most successful, innovative ideas and strategies to assist each other in becoming more effective in their positions. The format of the conference is concurrent sessions of papers, workshops and panel discussions as well as featured presentations by prominent figures in higher education. Each year there is a different overall theme, but the emphasis of every conference is to provide practical, usable information in a climate of open discussion of common concerns.

The conference will be held in Orlando, Florida. It will begin at 8:45 am, Feb 8, and conclude at noon February 10.

Proposal Submission
You are invited to submit a proposal for the presentation of a paper, panel, or workshop. All presentations should have a practical, applied orientation. This will be an extremely important factor in determining which proposals are accepted for presentation at the conference.

Paper sessions will be 30 minutes long, with an additional 20 minutes for discussion.

Panels will be 110 minutes in length, 20 minutes of which should be for discussion. Panels must include THREE or FOUR presenters addressing different aspects of the SAME topic.

Workshops will be 110 minutes and must actively involve the participants. Please indicate specifically how this will occur.

If you are submitting a workshop proposal, please indicate if this workshop has been presented before and your experience in presenting this and/or other workshops.
All presentations should encourage discussion.
