Garden City Community College - Kansas State University Distance Partnership
Kansas State University and Garden City Community College (GCCC) offer a distance program that allows students to earn an Associate of Arts degree in Education at GCCC, and then to transfer the majority of those credits to K-State towards the completion of a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.
Elementary Education Bachelor's Degree with an area of concentration in English as a Second Language
K-State offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in ESL through distance education. This distance degree completion program is designed for students who have completed the first two years of general education courses outlined by the articulation agreement set forth between Garden City Community College and Kansas State University. The bachelor's degree in Elementary Education is designed to provide a deep understanding of content, teaching methods, and student learning appropriate for teaching grades K-6. The area of concentration in ESL provides a solid understanding of issues surrounding culturally and linguistically diverse students in the areas of methodology for teaching second language learners, assessment, linguistics, and cross-cultural competence. The curriculum is designed for preparing future teachers to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Applications for admission to this program are accepted through the Bachelor's Degree Completion Program in the Division of Continuing Education.
A Career in Teaching ESL
Kansas State University's Elementary Education graduates who are licensed in ESL are qualified to teach in any classroom from kindergarten through sixth grades. They may become regular classroom teachers or may be ESL specialists within an elementary school building. They have the potential to serve as advocates for students and families who come from diverse backgrounds and are typically sought out as resources for the schools and the districts they work in.
