K-State to Offer Hazwoper or Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Training Programs

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training offered at Kansas State University in June will include a 40-hour training course and an eight-hour refresher course.

Both courses will meet in 11 Edwards Hall on the K-State campus.

The 40-hour training course will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4-8 and provides certification for the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's 29 CFR 1910.120. The training includes an overview of federal regulations, toxicology, hazard communication, site management, air monitoring, site characterization, operating procedures, safety, spill cleanup and more. Participants also will write and review health and safety plans, emergency response plans and incident command procedures. The course costs $475, with the option of earning three undergraduate credit hours for an additional fee.

The eight-hour refresher course will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 11. The course is for individuals who have previously completed the 40-hour or 24-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training, including faculty and students working with hazardous substances in the laboratory and on field sites, as well as first responders or industry hazardous material handlers. The course will re-qualify participants to enter hazardous waste sites in the field and to work appropriately with hazardous materials in the laboratory. The cost is $125.

Registration fees for both courses include all course materials, handouts and a certificate verifying completion of the course. The curriculum for the courses includes lectures, classroom exercises and actual field experience. Participants will be expected to suit up in protective equipment, including a self-contained breathing apparatus and full containment suits.
